Three-times MLS Cup champions Cologne have secured their second title in a row.
The Reds beat Cologne in the final of the Europa League.
The final, which will be held on Saturday, was a nail-biter with the hosts getting a deserved 2-1 win on aggregate.
Cologne also won the Champions League on home soil last season.
“I’m very proud of our team.
We had a great run in the Europa league last year, so I’m really proud of them,” said Cologne head coach Peter Schmeichel.”
It was really difficult, but we had a really good team.
I’m very happy for them.
We were very close at the end and we needed a winner.
The players were ready for the game.”
Cologne boss Peter Schmetzer added: “We lost the game, but they were ready to play the game.
The second half was very important.”
Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice for the Reds, who are currently seventh in the Bundesliga.
The Portuguese midfielder has been linked with a move to Manchester United this summer.
Schmeiche said he expects the move to be complete in the coming weeks.
“Of course I want the Manchester United player,” he said.
“This is an important step for us.
He is a fantastic player.
He can play at the highest level.
I think he’s a very good player and it’s a big step.””
We have the players to win the Bundesliga and the Champions league.
We have a good team and I’m confident that we can achieve it.”
